The fabric used to create your Freeman raincoat is a true two-ply, waterproof/breathable fabric that is extremely effective at keeping out the rain, but over time, dirt, grime and the oils in our hands all contribute to making the waterproof fabric less effective. Just like your car or bicycle occasionally requires simple maintenance, your Freeman jacket needs a little special attention from time to time. Here are few simple tips to make sure you and your jacket have a long and happy life together.
- We recommend being conservative with the frequency with which you machine-wash your jacket. When it is time, use only a front-load washing machine. Top loaders and their agitators are garment destroyers. Larger items, like a hooded Freeman jacket, can wrap themselves around the agitator, pulling and over-stressing many of the seams and parts of the fabric.
- Use only non-detergent soaps like Nikwax Techwash. Detergent soaps do not rinse clean from the surface of the fabric and actually attract water. Your Freeman jacket has a Durable Water Repellant (DWR) finish – it's your jacket's first line of defense against the rain and is what causes water to "bead" on the surface of the jacket, instead of soaking into the outer layer and causing wet spots. Detergent residue inhibits the functionality of the DWR finish and will cause wet spots to occur. The underlying waterproof membrane will keep the water out, but the jacket will feel heavy as these wet spots add weight.
A sporadic cold wash and a fluff on low heat following the above guidelines will aid quite a bit in refreshing the performance of your Freeman. Over time, however, the DWR finish on the fabric will need some additional help as laundering and daily wear (bag straps, bus rides, and other factors) will slowly break it down. The underlying waterproof layer will continue to work, but again, you will notice areas of wetness, especially on the cuffs and around the pockets. Every Freeman raincoat purchased at our store or through our site comes with a coupon for one complimentary laundering and DWR treatment at Rainy Pass Repair, a company in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle that has been an expert in outdoor garment repair since 1986. Once your Freeman stops performing the way it did when you bought it, take it or mail it to Rainy Pass Repair with your coupon and we'll take care of the rest.
- For the do-it-yourselfers, there are wash-in DWR treatments from brands like Nikwax and McNett. A proper laundering and DWR restoration will make your jacket like new again, and will assuredly aid in many years of happiness between you and your Freeman.
- If you have any further questions on care please don't hesitate to get in touch with us at email@example.com
