New at Freeman: Velva Sheen Cozies

Velva Sheen has quickly become one of our favorite brands here at Freeman. They make the ultimate vintage-sportswear-inspired basics using awesome fabrics: tees, sweatshirts, and sweat pants that aren't fussy and are made to last. They make those basic everyday staples that can somehow be so hard to find. Our first shipment of Velva Sheen arrived earlier this year, with some beautiful ring-spun cotton/poly blend crewneck pocket tees. This fall some awesome Velva Sheen sweats arrived: their Viper Sweatpant in Heather Grey and their Freedom Sweatshirt in Navy and Grey

As far as sweatpants go, the Viper have a few features that make them pretty special. Made using a super soft and stretchy French Terry blend - 80% Cotton 16% Polyester 4% Rayon they have a lightweight and very comfortable feeling to them. The addition of the synthetic poly and natural rayon fibers when spinning the cotton yarns adds strength to the knit fabric.  Meaning these sweatpants are quite durable - they could withstand the most rigorous of workouts but they'll also be great for lounging on a Sunday morning. The waistband contains a hidden elastic, along with a thick, cotton drawcord. The crotch is made with a large, diamond shaped gusset that is sewn in with a flatlocked seam for added durability. The front slat pockets are reinforced with a black woven cotton backing so they'll retain their shape. The seams are flatlocked throughout and the leg is finished with a 2.75" ribbed cuff.

And they feature one rounded applied pocket on the back.

Another piece just in from Velva Sheen is the Freedom Sweatshirt in Navy and Heather Grey. Made with a lightweight french terry, its an everyday basic that is refreshingly classic and simple in its design. The sweatshirt is contructed mainly using  overlock stitch for less bulk and the ribbed neck band is double top-stitched to maintain its shape.

Though this sweatshirt looks very simple, it's hiding a very cool vintage inspired detail - the raglan sleeve is attached with an underarm gusset unlike any gusset we've ever seen!  In general, gussets are added for additional mobility and durability to the garment and to reduce stress on high action seams. As shown below, the body piece of the sweatshirt extends into two sharp points at the underarm that are then sewn as the gusset into the sleeve piece. It's a very cool detail, and translates into the sweatshirt staying put when your arms are raised.

We have been very impressed with the craftsmanship and quality that goes into Velva Sheen. They are a brand that is staying true to its roots as makers of quality athletic apparel, and its heartening to see them continue the tradition of making quality stuff in the ol' US of A.
