Red Wing Heritage Weekender Collection

Posted: Apr 26 2016

Much of the appeal behind Red Wing Heritage lies in their century-old archive of classic workboot styles that they re-interpret for a modern audience. Iron Rangers, Work Chukkas, Moc Toes...all decades-old, classic shapes that Red Wing has kept fresh. We love them because of their time-tested style and functionality. However, Red Wing Heritage has also distinguished itself with its shoe silhouettes that combine various elements of classic styles into something entirely new. Their most recent is the Weekender Collection, and here at Freeman, we absolutely love it.

Red Wing Heritage debuted two styles for the collection this spring, and we carry them both: the Weekender Chukka and the Weekender Oxford. The Weekender Collection, named in honor of those off-work hours where you want something a little more lightweight and comfortable, but still durable enough to take whatever abuse you can throw at 'em, are the perfect summer shoe: lightweight and flexible as soon as you put them on, they can be dressed up for a summer wedding or paired with jeans for a long weekend getaway.

The Weekender Chukka combines the ankle-height boot style of their popular Work Chukka with the light weight and textured polyurethane sole of the iconic desert boot. We have them in a beautiful Hawthorne Muleskinner leather – essentially a reverse suede, it's a beautifully textured leather that will age nicely.

The Weekender Oxford is a low-cut shoe, as opposed to a boot, that still features the durability and ruggedness of Red Wing Heritage's hundred-plus years of workboot manufacturing. Here at the shop, we've got 'em in Red Wing Heritage's ever-popular Copper Rough & Tough, a reddish-brown leather that works equally well dressed up or down.

The Weekender Chukka and Weekender Oxford are perfect for spring in summer due to their lightweight construction and minimal break-in period. This is achieved via Red Wing Heritage's method of "stitch out" construction. In their words, "the outer perimeter of the leather upper is turned out and then cemented and stitched to the larger profile of the midsole before it’s trimmed. By eliminating the sturdy ribbed insole we use in our Goodyear welt boots, the chukka and oxford save weight and are more flexible right out of the box." The Weekender Collection are immediately much more lightweight and pliable (and comfortable!) due to this construction style, making them the perfect summer shoe.
